I previously covered FinderPop, a great utility that, among its myriad features, lets you see what’s inside a folder in the Finder by simply right-clicking on that folder–you get a hierarchical menu of its contents. But if that’s the main FinderPop feature you want, FolderGlance is a good substitute–although it costs a bit more.

With FolderGlance installed, right-clicking (or Control-clicking) on a folder in the Finder pops up a contextual

Ustream, a service that provides live video streaming across the Internet, has attracted US$20 million in investment from Japan’s Softbank and is planning an expansion into Asia, it said Tuesday.

The investment by Softbank gives the Japanese company a 13.7 percent stake in the company and could be followed by additional cash. Softbank holds options that, if exercised by July 2011, could see its investment reach $75 million, at which time

We have interrupted our nonstop coverage of Apple iPad mania to bring you this important word about the freedom of information — more specifically, Wikileaks.org.

I’ve written about Wikileaks several times over the last few years, in part because it’s a classic example of why the Internet is such an extraordinary telecommunications tool.

[ Also on InfoWorld: Need more reasons to support Wikileaks? Check out its tussles with

Illustration: Jack GallagherGoogle has quietly turned on IPv6 support for its YouTube video streaming Web site, sending a spike of IPv6 traffic across the Internet that has continued from last Thursday until Monday.

Industry observers say YouTube appeared to be supporting IPv6 in production mode, as opposed to running a test of the next-generation Internet protocol.

“On Thursday, midday California time, we saw a large amount

ite the recession, Mac sales continue unabated. Whether it’s a result of the Windows XP-to-Windows 7 upgrade debacle, the hip “Get a Mac” ads, or a halo effect from the successful iPod and iPhone lines, many consumers are probably celebrating their first holiday season as Mac users.

My sister-in-law is one such convert, and as a dutiful relative, I’ve tried to reflect her new status in my holiday shopping. But what do you get a new Mac

Before I wrote about the new pricing model for Intego’s VirusBarrier X6, I first contacted the company to make sure that I understood both the pricing and the mechanics of the program’s new sales model. After receiving confirmation that I had things correct, I started writing.

After the piece went online, I was contacted by an Intego representative, who let me know that one of my basic pricing figures was, in fact, wrong–and by a fair

Warning: I am about to say some critical things about a device that, according to its creator, is both magical and revolutionary. If you’re the kind of person who thinks that Apple can do no wrong and that anyone who says otherwise is loco, proceed with caution.

Still with me? Good. Like most tech enthusiasts, I’ve been devoting a decent amount of thought to Apple’s newly announcediPad over the past 24 hours. Maybe you’ve heard of it;

There are a few spots in OS X applications where you have the ability to choose a photo to use as a representation of you–Address Book and iChat are two that come to mind. In Address Book, click on your entry, click on Edit, then double-click on the picture box next to your name.

This brings up the picture selection window, where you can take a picture with a connected camera, insert an image from a file, or paste an image from the clipboard.

The lack of support for Adobe Flash in Apple’s newest shiny device has been, depending on who you talk to, a critical flaw in the device, or an “about time” decision to drop a dead weight. Flash and the Mac community have a long and complicated relationship, though, and the iPad is only the latest battlefield.

Adobe CTO Kevin Lynch weighed in on the situation in a blog post earlier this week, in which he pointed a finger squarely at Apple:##2##

The Danish Parliament has decided on a set of rules to which open document formats must adhere if they are to be used by state authorities after April 1, 2011, Denmark’s Liberal Party said on Friday.

The agreement isn’t about restricting users to one office suite, or choosing between the ODF (OpenDocument Format) or OOXML (Office Open XML) standards. Rather, the Danish Parliament has agreed on the criteria that open document formats must

On the Google Enterprise blog, Rajen Sheth, Google Apps Senior Product Manager, announced that Google is dropping Google Docs and Google Sites support for several older browsers,

Say hello to my little friend, AutoHotkey. This small–and free–utility can accomplish big things. It’s one of the best ways I know to make your PC work exactly the way you want it to.

Specifically, AutoHotkey (AHK for short) is a macro recorder, meaning it stores a sequence of keyboard, mouse, and/or joystick (remember those?) commands and then lets you play them back.

That may not sound like a big deal, but trust me, it’s

If iPhoto is slow to launch on your machine–as in taking over a minute to load, including visits from the spinning beach ball–here’s a possible fix that also happens to be a simple one. Once the application finally launches, open its Preferences by hitting Command-, (that’s Command-comma), then click on Sharing.

In Sharing, see if either the “Look for shared photos” or “Share my photos” boxes are checked. If they are, and assuming you’re

“Many other companies have already stopped supporting older browsers like Internet Explorer 6.0 as well as browsers that are not supported by their own manufacturers.
